Sergio Vieira de Mello Award - 5th edition

The Villa Decius Association, a nongovernmental organization based in Krakow, is calling for nominations for its annual prize awarded to people and groups that promote democracy and tolerance.

The association, which aim is to promote intercultural dialogue, named its prize in memory of Sergio Vieira de Mello, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, who was killed in a bomb attack in Baghdad in August 2003. It has been awarded to individuals as well as nongovernmental organization for active involvement in peaceful coexistence and cooperation of communities, religions and cultures.

Among the Laureates of the Prize are Tadeusz Mazowiecki, Rev. Marian Zelazek SVD (1918-2006), Alaxandr Milinkevich, Maryna Hulia, the One World Association, "Krzyzowa" Foundation for European Understanding, Jewish Culture Festival, Magurycz Association.

The closing date for nominations is 30th June 2008. The laureates will be announced at Villa Decius at an international conference "Millenium Goals of Culture?" to be held on 16-17 October 2008.

The honorary patrons of the award are the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the Swedish ambassador to Warsaw, and Brazil's ambassador to Poland.
